SCORE MIDLANDS CHAPTER WORKSHOPS

SCORE will hold a variety of workshops throughout the 2008 year,
as summarized below.


    Except where noted otherwise:
    The workshops are usually held at the Executive Training Center   																																			 are held in the Executive Training Center of the 
    of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce building, 
    located at 930 Richland Street downtown Columbia (between Park and Lincoln Streets  
    -- directly west of the Strom Thurmond federal building).
    The actual location will be posted on this web site (www.scoremidlands.org)
    at least a month prior to the workshop.

    Attendees may park in the rear of the building in any Chamber of Commerce
    or Chamber of Commerce visitor space at no charge.
    
    Workshop registration/check-in is from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m., with the
    workshops themselves running from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. unless noted otherwise.
    The Cost of the workshops is specified on the registration form.

Employment Law Survival Skills 
(With an Accent on the Practical)
Topics include:

   Hiring, firing, and all things in between
   Understanding "at will" employment
   Employee handbooks, policies, and contracts
   Non-compete and non-solicitation agreements
   Avoiding breach of contract claims
   Compensation issues
   Employee vs. Independent Contractor (BEWARE!)
   Harassment claims

Creating a Business Plan for the Small Business Start-Up

Topics include:
   Confidentiality Statement
   Executive Summary
	   Why is it important?
	   How to write one?
	   Class critique of three sample Executive Summaries.
   How to prepare a business plan
	   Emphasis on Marketing and financial sections.
	   Use a sample company with sample data as a teaching aid.
   Helpful hints on how to successfully present your plan to lenders or investors.

Topics include:
   Why you should protect your great ideas.
   The role of patents, trademarks and copyrights.
   Determining which of these protections is right for you.
   How to get a copyright, trademark, or patent.
   How to effectively use this protection in your business.
   Recourses available if your patent, etc. is infringed upon.
   Turning the protected idea into income and profits.
